01概覽

Rain Water (雨水, Yǔ Shuǐ) is the second of the twenty-four solar terms, falling two weeks after Beginning of Spring at the moment the sun reaches 330° of ecliptic longitude — usually between 18 and 20 February. The name describes what is starting to happen on the ground: snow gives way to rain, and the coldest stretch of the year is, on average, behind rather than ahead.

For a BaZi reader the more useful fact is structural rather than seasonal: Rain Water sits inside the 寅 month, not at its edge. Beginning of Spring already did the work of opening that month a fortnight earlier, and Rain Water simply marks its middle. Nothing about a birth chart changes at this instant — it is a waypoint on the calendar, not a boundary on it.

02標記什麼

Astronomically, Rain Water is a mid-point term (中氣): it sits exactly halfway between the cross-quarter moment of Beginning of Spring and the following month-opening term, Awakening of Insects. In the agricultural calendar it traditionally cues the start of spring ploughing in much of China, as thawing ground and increasing rainfall make the soil workable again.

The name is a forecast of trend rather than a claim about any given day — a lot of the territory it covers is still cold, and the shift it names is gradual rather than sudden. It is grouped with Beginning of Spring under "early spring" in the traditional four-season, six-term division, marking the point where that opening stretch is roughly half over.

03在八字命盤中

Rain Water is a 氣 — a mid-month term — so it does not change the month pillar, the year pillar, or any other pillar in the chart. The branch for anyone born under Rain Water is still 寅 (Yín), exactly as it was for anyone born at the instant of Beginning of Spring two weeks earlier; nothing about the pillar structure moves between those two dates.

This is not a special case. Running this site's engine across a full year confirms the general pattern the twenty-four terms are built on: of the twelve terms classed as 氣, none of them opens or changes a pillar — all twelve month-branch changes for the year land on the twelve terms classed as 節 instead. Rain Water is simply the first of those twelve non-events a reader meets after the year begins.

The practical upshot: a birth date falling on Rain Water needs no special handling. The relevant boundary already happened at Beginning of Spring, and the next one will not arrive until Awakening of Insects opens the 卯 month.

04容易混淆的名稱

Water (水)The Five Elements (五行). Unrelated systems that happen to share an English word. Rain Water is a point on the solar calendar; Water the element is one of the five phases used to describe a Day Master or a pillar's makeup. A chart can be strong or weak in the element Water regardless of which solar term a birth falls on.

05以描述而非預言來讀

Rain Water marks a season's midpoint on the solar calendar and changes no pillar in a chart; it describes a moment, not a forecast about the weeks that follow it.
