Empty Branches空亡

A symbolic marker produced by simple arithmetic on the sexagenary cycle, traditionally read as a branch whose usual meaning runs thin rather than a curse on that position.

取自The day pillar's (or year pillar's) position within its ten-unit decade group (旬) of the 60 sexagenary combinations.

01概覽

Empty Branches (空亡, Kōng Wáng — also called 旬空, Xún Kōng, "decade emptiness") is arithmetic rather than folklore, and that is exactly what makes it worth explaining properly instead of just naming it. Ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches combine in a fixed cycle to produce the sixty sexagenary pairs (六十甲子) that number Chinese years, months, days, and hours. Because ten does not divide evenly into twelve, every run of ten consecutive pairs — every 旬, or "decade" — uses all ten stems exactly once, but only ten of the twelve branches. Two branches are left over: no stem is paired with them anywhere in that particular decade. Those two leftover branches are, for that decade, "empty."

This is the one symbolic star on this list built entirely from counting rather than from a memorised correspondence table, which is also why it is one of the more teachable pieces of the tradition: once the sixty-pair cycle and the ten-into-twelve mismatch are understood, the rest follows by arithmetic rather than by rote lookup.

02取法

To find a chart's Empty Branches, identify which decade group (旬) the day pillar's own stem-branch pair falls into — there are six such decades across the full sixty-pair cycle, each one starting on a pair where the stem cycle resets to 甲 (Jiǎ). Every decade has exactly two branches with no stem partner in that decade; those two branches are the day pillar's Empty Branches. If either of those two branches then appears elsewhere in the chart — in the year, month, or hour branch — that position is traditionally read as "empty," meaning the usual reading of whatever sits there is muted, thinned, or less reliable than it would otherwise be.

Some schools compute the same procedure from the year pillar instead of the day pillar, producing a parallel but different pair of empty branches and a different reading of which position in the chart is affected. The day-pillar convention is the more common one in modern practice, but the year-pillar method has its own textual lineage and is not simply an error.

Because the mechanism is arithmetic, the pairing of "decade" to "empty branches" is genuinely fixed rather than a matter of school-to-school table variance — the disagreement in this area is about which pillar to start counting from and how much weight to give the result, not about the arithmetic itself.

03各派分歧之處

Beyond the day-pillar-versus-year-pillar starting point, texts disagree on scope: some read an empty branch as muting only the specific palace or hidden-stem relationship it touches, while others treat it as a chart-wide caution to weight that branch's usual significance more lightly across every reading drawn from it. Neither convention has displaced the other in current practice.

04我們不做的宣稱

The word "empty" invites a reading this star cannot support — that the branch, the pillar, or the life area it touches is doomed, cursed, or cut off entirely. That is a folk exaggeration of an arithmetic result. Read at its actual scope, an empty branch marks a position whose usual meaning is traditionally read as thinner or less reliable, not absent, and certainly not a promise of loss; this remains a traditional reading layer this site describes rather than a value its calculator computes.

05容易混淆的名稱

Void Star (地空)Zi Wei Dou Shu minor stars. Both carry "emptiness" in their English name and both are read as thinning the usual reading of whatever they touch, but the mechanisms have nothing in common. Void Star is a fixed malefic minor star placed on a Zi Wei chart by its own rule; Empty Branches is a sexagenary-cycle arithmetic result on a Bazi chart. Sharing a translated word in English does not mean sharing a method.

Void (絕), the tenth Life StageBaZi Twelve Life Stages. This site's own Life Stages sequence separately uses "Void" as the English name for 絕 (Jué), the tenth of the Twelve Life Stages — the point where an element's own qi is read as having reached zero before the cycle turns back toward renewal. That is a statement about elemental strength at a branch, computed from the Day Master's stem; Empty Branches is a statement about a stem-branch pairing gap in the sexagenary calendar. The English word "Void" collides across the two; the underlying mechanisms do not.

旬空 as used in some Zi Wei sourcesZi Wei Dou Shu (varies by school). A handful of Zi Wei texts use the same Chinese term, 旬空, for a concept in that system distinct from both Void Star and this Bazi symbolic star. This site does not maintain a Zi Wei glossary entry under that name, and readers should not assume any Zi Wei page corresponds to this one just because the Chinese characters match.

06以描述而非預言來讀

Empty Branches marks a position whose usual meaning is traditionally read as thinner or less reliable, arrived at by counting through the sexagenary cycle, not a curse or a promise of loss, and the day-pillar and year-pillar conventions can disagree about which position it affects.
