Nobleman天乙貴人
A symbolic star read from the Day Master's stem, traditionally associated with benefactors and helpful people rather than self-reliant effort.
01概覽
Nobleman (天乙貴人, Tiān Yǐ Guì Rén) is one of the most quoted symbolic stars in popular BaZi writing, and one of the oldest — most treatments trace it back through Tang-dynasty fate-calculation texts. The name means something like "the noble person who is heaven's first pick," and the traditional reading is exactly what it sounds like: a marker for benefactors, mentors, and doors opened by other people rather than by the chart holder's own push. A stem carrying Nobleman at a given branch is traditionally read as more likely to attract help at that position — a useful colleague, a well-placed introduction, a stroke of assistance arriving from outside.
Readers coming from Zi Wei Dou Shu will recognise the shape of this idea immediately: it rhymes with Day Noble and Night Noble, the two Zi Wei minor stars built on the same "benefactor" motif. The overlap is real enough to be worth naming up front, and different enough to be worth keeping separate — see Confusions below.
02取法
The lookup starts from the Day Master's stem and returns one or two Earthly Branches, traditionally split into a Yang Nobleman (陽貴人) and a Yin Nobleman (陰貴人) — day or night registers of the same idea. Whichever branch in the chart matches the stem's assigned pair is marked as carrying the star; some schools check the year stem in addition to, or instead of, the day stem, on the reasoning that the year stem represents the family or public-facing register of the chart.
The stem-to-branch assignments are usually taught through a memorised couplet rather than a printed grid, and that oral-transmission history is part of why the exact wording is not perfectly settled across texts — see Schools below for a specific, well-known example of that variance.
03各派分歧之處
The couplet itself has more than one transmitted wording, and the discrepancy is not trivial: some versions of the mnemonic assign the Tiger-and-Horse branch pair to the Geng (庚) stem, phrased along the lines of "庚辛逢虎馬" (Geng and Xin both meet Tiger and Horse), while other transmitted versions instead read "六辛逢馬虎" (Xin alone meets Horse and Tiger), which shifts the pairing away from Geng. Because the two versions do not agree on which stem the pairing belongs to, this entry describes the mechanism rather than reproducing either couplet as settled fact — readers checking a specific chart against a printed table should expect to see one of at least two lineages, not a single universally agreed grid.
There is also a live methodological disagreement about which stem to key from at all: day-stem lookup is the more common modern convention, but year-stem lookup has its own textual lineage and some practitioners run both and treat agreement between them as a stronger signal.
04我們不做的宣稱
Popular treatments sometimes flatten Nobleman into a promise of a specific powerful patron arriving on schedule, which overreaches what a symbolic star can honestly carry. As with the rest of this layer, Nobleman is a traditional tendency marker read off a fixed lookup, not a scheduled event, and it is not something this site's calculator computes; it belongs to the same descriptive, secondary-flavour layer covered in the symbolic-stars overview.
05容易混淆的名稱
Day Noble / Night Noble (天魁 / 天鉞) — Zi Wei Dou Shu minor stars. Most modern popular sources describe Day Noble and Night Noble as running on a lookup table close to Nobleman's own — that historical claim is moderately, not strongly, sourced, and this entry states it as a common description rather than settled history. What is not in question is the mechanical difference: in Zi Wei the two Noble stars land on fixed palaces once, set by the natal chart's structure, while in BaZi the Nobleman is checked freshly against each pillar's branch, so the same chart can show it in one pillar and not another. Same benefactor idea, two different placement mechanics.
