Peach Blossom桃花
A symbolic star read from the branches, traditionally associated with charm, attraction, and magnetism rather than a forecast of romance.
01概覽
Peach Blossom (桃花, Táo Huā), also called Xian Chi (咸池) in older texts, is the most recognisable symbolic star in popular BaZi writing — the label most likely to show up in a social-media chart reading. Traditionally it marks charm, attraction, and social magnetism: a person carrying it is read as more noticeable, more easily liked, and more prone to romantic or social interest arriving from other people.
The mechanism is worth understanding rather than just quoting, because it connects directly to a piece of this site's own engine. Peach Blossom sits at what the Twelve Life Stages call the Bathing position — the second stage of the cycle, where an element's qi is described as young, exposed, and unsteady. That branch-level association between Bathing and Peach Blossom is not a coincidence of naming; both describe the same four "cardinal" branches (子午卯酉) from two different traditions layered onto the same chart.
02取法
The lookup is keyed off the branch's Three Harmonies (三合) group, one of four trine sets that each earthly branch belongs to, and it always resolves to one of the four cardinal branches: 申子辰 (Shen–Zi–Chen) points to Yǒu (酉); 巳酉丑 (Si–You–Chou) points to Wǔ (午); 寅午戌 (Yin–Wu–Xu) points to Mǎo (卯); and 亥卯未 (Hai–Mao–Wei) points to Zǐ (子). Whichever cardinal branch that trine group produces is the Peach Blossom branch — if it appears anywhere among the chart's four branches, the star is present.
Practitioners commonly split the result into an "inner" and "outer" register by which pillars carry it: Peach Blossom appearing in the year or month pillar is read as inner Peach Blossom, tied to family background and early social life, while Peach Blossom in the day or hour pillar is read as outer Peach Blossom, tied to adult romantic and social life. Some schools compute the lookup from the year branch only, others from the day branch, and a few check both and read agreement between them as a stronger signal.
03各派分歧之處
Xian Chi (咸池) and Peach Blossom are sometimes treated as identical, sometimes as related-but-distinct: a handful of texts use Xian Chi for the raw lookup result and reserve "Peach Blossom" for a chart where the branch shows up reinforced by other configurations. This site treats the two names as referring to the same underlying lookup, since that is the more common convention, but readers will meet texts that draw a finer line between them.
04我們不做的宣稱
English-language treatments of Peach Blossom lean hard toward a single, narrower claim than the tradition supports — an affair, or a chaotic love life, presented as a certainty. That is a popularisation, not the core reading. Held to its actual scope, Peach Blossom describes a register of charm and social pull in the chart's makeup; it does not forecast a specific relationship, a marriage, or an infidelity, and this site's calculator does not surface it as a computed output — it belongs to the traditional, secondary-flavour layer this glossary documents rather than to the structural core a reading is built on.
