神煞 · Yáng Rèn

Yang Blade羊刃

A symbolic star read from the Day Master's stem, traditionally associated with sharp, forceful, sometimes excessive energy rather than a promised injury.

取自The Day Master's heavenly stem — the branch at that stem's peak-strength position.

01概覽

Yang Blade (羊刃, Yáng Rèn) marks a branch where the Day Master's own element is read as overwhelmingly, almost dangerously strong. The traditional character is double-edged by design: sharp, forceful, decisive energy that can cut cleanly through obstacles, or can cut the chart holder, depending on whether the rest of the chart has the structure to channel it. It is one of the more consequential symbolic stars in classical texts, discussed in the same breath as genuinely structural chart features rather than as pure decoration.

It is also one of the two symbolic stars on this list with a direct namesake in Zi Wei Dou Shu: Ram Star (擎羊), a malefic minor star built on the same "sharp confrontation" image. The two are close enough in name and flavour that readers frequently assume they are the same thing under two labels — see Confusions below for why that assumption does not fully hold up, and why even practitioners disagree about it.

02取法

The classical lookup restricts Yang Blade to the four yang heavenly stems (甲, 丙, 戊, 庚, 壬) and places it at the branch where that stem's own element reaches what the Twelve Life Stages call its Prime position — the fifth stage of the cycle, an element's qi at its absolute peak before the cycle turns. For the yang stems this consistently lands on one of four branches: 卯, 午, 酉, or 子, depending on the stem's element.

If that branch appears among the chart's own branches, Yang Blade is present, and its presence is traditionally read together with the Day Master's overall strength: a Day Master that is already strong and also carries Yang Blade is read very differently from one that is weak and carries it, since in the latter case the extra push can be what keeps a thin Day Master viable rather than pushing an already-strong one into excess.

03各派分歧之處

Whether the yin stems (乙, 丁, 己, 辛, 癸) have their own version — sometimes called 陰刃, an "Yin Blade" — is a genuine, unresolved disagreement in the tradition. Some schools extend the same peak-position logic to the yin stems and compute a parallel set of branches; others hold that Yang Blade is by definition a yang-stem phenomenon and that a yin Day Master simply does not carry this star. Neither camp has fully displaced the other.

The relationship between Yang Blade and Zi Wei's Ram Star is similarly unsettled within the commentary tradition itself: some writers treat the two as literally the same concept expressed in two different chart systems, given the shared "blade/ram" imagery and confrontational character, while others insist the two should never be conflated, since one is a per-stem lookup on a Bazi chart and the other is a fixed minor-star placement on a Zi Wei chart with its own independent mechanics. This entry does not adjudicate that disagreement — it is presented here as an open question the tradition has not settled, not as a claim this site is making either way.

04我們不做的宣稱

Because of its sharp, cutting imagery, Yang Blade attracts overreach readings that treat it as a marker for a specific injury, a surgery, or a violent event on a timeline. That is not what a symbolic star can honestly support. Held at its actual scope, Yang Blade describes an intensity register in the Day Master's own strength — forceful, sometimes excessive — and it is not computed or surfaced by this site's calculator, which stops at Day Master strength itself rather than extending into this traditional, secondary layer.

05容易混淆的名稱

Ram Star (擎羊)Zi Wei Dou Shu minor stars. Both carry a sharp, confrontational, cutting character, and the names echo each other closely enough that many readers assume they are the same star under two labels. They are not mechanically the same: Yang Blade is a per-stem lookup tied to a Bazi Day Master's peak-strength position, while Ram Star is a fixed minor-star placement dropped onto a Zi Wei chart by its own independent rule. Whether the two share a deeper historical origin is itself disputed within the tradition — see Schools above.

06以描述而非預言來讀

Yang Blade describes an intensity register in the Day Master's own strength — sharp, forceful, and sometimes excessive — not a promised injury or event, and whether it applies to yin-stem Day Masters at all is a question different schools answer differently.
