Siblings Palace (兄弟)

siblings + close peers

The room for the people who grew up with you — and, by extension, the inner circle of peers you carry into adulthood.

概覽

The Siblings Palace (兄弟, xiōng dì) is the second cell of any Zi Wei Dou Shu chart, sitting one step counter-clockwise from the Life Palace. The literal characters mean 'older brother and younger brother,' which is narrower than what the palace actually covers. Classical commentaries extend the domain to all blood siblings of any gender, and modern readings extend it again to the small group of peers a person treats as siblings even without the blood relation — childhood best friends, cousins raised together, the two or three people you would call before anyone else.

What the Siblings Palace is not is the same thing as the Friends Palace (交友) further around the chart. Friends is your social ring, your professional network, the wider circle. Siblings is much closer in: it is the handful of people whose phone calls you take at three in the morning, whose opinions you internalize even when you disagree with them, whose absence at a wedding or funeral you would notice immediately.

For Western readers who treat 'family' and 'friends' as two clean categories, this palace sits in an awkward middle space. It is not parents (that is a separate palace) and not romantic partners (also separate). It is the lateral peer band — the people who share your generation, your formative environment, and a portion of your worldview by accident of having grown up alongside you.

核心解讀

The stars in the Siblings Palace describe the quality of those close relationships, not the literal number of siblings you have. Emperor Star here suggests a sibling or peer who exerts strong gravitational pull — the older brother whose career you measure yourself against, the cousin whose opinions you take more seriously than you would like to admit. Wolf Star here suggests siblings or peers with appetite and variety — a wide spread of interests and personalities in your inner circle. An empty Siblings Palace does not mean no siblings; it means the chart reader should look across to the Friends Palace to find where the lateral support lands.

Classical readings pay close attention to whether the stars in this palace are 'in good company' (廟旺) or 'unsupported' (落陷). The same star configurations that produce a steady, supportive sibling band in one chart can produce friction, distance, or one-sided dependence in another. Modern readings often soften this into 'the texture of your peer support' rather than a verdict about who is good or bad — the palace describes the dynamic, and the dynamic is workable.

與對宮的關係 Friends Palace

Across the chart from Siblings sits the Friends Palace (交友). The axis maps onto a single question: where does your lateral support come from — the few people closest to you, or the wider ring of acquaintances and colleagues? A heavy Siblings Palace with a light Friends Palace describes someone who concentrates trust in a small inner circle and finds wider socializing draining. A light Siblings Palace with a heavy Friends Palace describes the opposite — energy from breadth, less reliance on any single close bond.

Most charts sit somewhere along the gradient rather than at the extremes, and the gradient itself is meaningful. People who feel guilty for not being closer to their siblings, and people who feel claustrophobic in tight friend groups, are often describing the same Siblings ↔ Friends balance from opposite sides of it.
