Grain in Ear芒種
The instant the sun reaches 75° of ecliptic longitude — the 節 that opens 午 in the month pillar at the height of summer.
01概覽
Grain in Ear (芒種, Máng Zhòng) is the ninth of the twenty-four solar terms and the month-opener that follows Grain Buds. It is an astronomical instant, not a day: the moment the sun reaches 75° of ecliptic longitude, which falls somewhere between 5 and 7 June depending on the year.
The name is a pair of instructions rather than a description of scenery. 芒 refers to the bristly awn on grains such as wheat and barley, and 種 does double duty as both "to sow" and "seed" — awned grain ready to bring in, and the moment to put the next seed in the ground. In the farming calendar it names a season of overlap, not a single harvest day.
02標記什麼
It sits between Grain Buds and the Summer Solstice, roughly two weeks out from each, on the run-up to the year's longest days. The overlap the name points to — one crop coming off the field while another goes in — is the closest thing this term has to a single defining image, which is why it reads less like "harvest" and more like a working season with two jobs happening at once.
03在八字命盤中
Grain in Ear is a 節 — a month-opening term — so at the instant the sun crosses 75° the month pillar's branch becomes 午 (Wǔ). 午 is the fire branch at the calendar's midpoint — the fifth of the twelve month branches counting from 寅, and the one the summer solstice falls inside — and this is the term that puts it in place for anyone born from this instant forward until the next 節 arrives.
This site's calculator applies that rule the same way it applies it at every other 節: the branch changes at the astronomical instant, not on a fixed calendar date, so the exact hour a birth falls in the days around 5–7 June determines whether the month pillar reads 巳 (from the previous term, Grain Buds) or 午.
04容易混淆的名稱
Grain Rain (穀雨) and Grain Buds (小滿) — The twenty-four solar terms. All three English names carry the word "grain", and it is easy to assume they behave the same way. They do not: Grain Rain and Grain Buds are both 氣 and change no pillar, while Grain in Ear is the one 節 among the three and opens the 午 month pillar on its own.
