Month Stream (流月 / liú yuè)

Month Stream (流月 / liú yuè) is the finest temporal layer that most Zi Wei Dou Shu practitioners use in regular readings. It sits inside the Year Stream — where the Year Stream rearranges stars once per calendar year, the Month Stream rearranges them once per lunar month. The result is a four-layer temporal stack in active use: natal chart → Decade Cycle → Year Stream → Month Stream. Each layer adds resolution, and the Month Stream is where the chart becomes most specific about timing.

The Month Stream is calculated from the lunar month's Earthly Branch, combined with the year's Heavenly Stem to determine the month's own Heavenly Stem (using the standard year-stem-to-month-stem derivation table). This means each month within a year produces a unique star arrangement and its own set of Four Activations. A year has twelve or thirteen lunar months (in leap-month years), and each month's overlay is distinct. The Month Stream therefore generates twelve or thirteen different temporal snapshots within each Year Stream, giving practitioners a month-by-month reading framework.

Practitioners use the Month Stream most often for timing questions: when within a year is a particular dynamic most concentrated? A Year Stream that places Wolf Star in the Career Palace describes a year of restless career appetite; the Month Stream then identifies which months within that year are most intensely Wolf-flavored — typically the months where the month-stream stars reinforce the year-stream configuration in that palace. This is the layer where clients most often ask 'when should I make this decision?' and where practitioners most often remind them that the chart describes emphasis, not instruction.

The Month Stream star positions are derived from the lunar month's Earthly Branch using the same placement algorithms as the natal chart and Year Stream, but keyed to the month's Branch. The month's Heavenly Stem is derived from the year's Heavenly Stem via a fixed lookup table (年上起月法). Together, the month's Stem and Branch determine both the star arrangement and the month's own Four Activations — producing a fourth activation layer on top of natal, decade, and year-stream activations.

The calculation uses Chinese lunar months, not Gregorian calendar months. Each lunar month begins at the new moon and runs roughly 29 or 30 days. Leap months (閏月) occur approximately every two to three years to keep the lunar and solar calendars aligned; practitioners typically read the leap month as sharing the same star arrangement as the regular month it follows, though some schools assign it distinct positions. A reader working with Month Stream timing must convert Gregorian dates to lunar months before looking up the arrangement.

At the month level, the temporal overlay becomes granular enough to create short periods of concentration or diffusion. A month where the month-stream stars cluster in the same palace that the Year Stream already highlights produces a concentration effect — that month feels more intense in that life area than the surrounding months. Conversely, a month where the month-stream stars scatter across palaces that are quiet in the Year Stream produces a diffusion effect — a month of lower thematic intensity that practitioners sometimes describe as a 'rest month' within an otherwise active year.

Month Stream readings also interact with the Annual Cycle palace. The Annual Cycle foregrounds one palace for the entire year; the Month Stream then modulates that foreground month by month. A year hosted by the Wealth Palace has twelve months, each with different visiting stars in the Wealth position — some months reinforce the wealth theme, others shift attention elsewhere. This modulation is what makes the Month Stream practically useful: it helps a reader identify which months within a thematically active year are the most concentrated.

The Month Stream completes the standard temporal stack in Zi Wei Dou Shu. The full reading framework — natal chart → Decade Cycle → Annual Cycle → Year Stream → Month Stream — produces five layers of overlapping signal. In practice, most readings focus on three of these: the natal chart for life-long patterns, the Decade Cycle for the current decade's theme, and the Year Stream plus Month Stream for current-year timing. The Annual Cycle provides additional context but is sometimes omitted in quick readings. There are even finer layers below the Month Stream — 流日 (Day Stream) and 流時 (Hour Stream) — but most practitioners treat these as too granular to carry reliable signal, and they are rarely used outside of highly specific timing questions like choosing a date for a significant event.
