Decade Cycle (大限 / dà xiàn)

Decade Cycle (大限 / dà xiàn) is the outermost temporal layer in a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart. Starting from the birth decade, the chart assigns each subsequent ten-year stretch to a specific palace. The stars sitting in that palace — along with the palace's own character — become the dominant signal for the person's life during those years. A chart whose third decade lands on the Career Palace with Emperor Star sitting in it reads as a decade where professional authority crystallizes. The same person's fourth decade might land on the Travel Palace with Wolf Star, reading as a restless decade of movement and appetite. Neither decade overwrites the natal chart; they are a rotating overlay on a fixed foundation.

The starting palace and direction of rotation depend on two factors: the person's birth year stem and their gender. Male yang-stem charts and female yin-stem charts rotate clockwise; the reverse rotates counterclockwise. This means two people with identical natal charts but different genders will walk through the twelve palaces in opposite directions, hitting different palaces in different decades. The system encodes a structural claim: the same natal potential unfolds along different temporal paths depending on these two birth parameters.

Practically, the Decade Cycle is where most clients first feel the system describing their actual life. The natal chart is abstract — it describes tendencies and configurations. The Decade Cycle maps those configurations onto lived decades, and people regularly recognize the shift between one decade and the next. A practitioner who skips the Decade Cycle and only reads the natal chart is doing half a reading. The temporal layer is not decorative; it is where the chart meets biography.

The Decade Cycle palace is determined by the starting palace and direction set at chart creation. The starting palace itself is derived from the Five Elements Bureau (五行局) — a number calculated from the combination of your Life Palace's position and your birth year stem. Common bureaus are Water-2, Wood-3, Metal-4, Earth-5, and Fire-6; the bureau number sets which palace hosts your first decade (ages 2–11 for Water-2, 3–12 for Wood-3, and so on). From there, the rotation proceeds one palace per decade in the direction determined by gender and year-stem polarity. A reader cannot choose or alter the rotation; it is fixed at birth.

When reading the Decade Cycle palace, a practitioner reads not just the main stars sitting in it but also the Triangle and Axis cluster anchored on that palace. The decade's trine cells and opposite cell all contribute to the reading. Additionally, the Four Activations can be recalculated using the Decade Cycle palace's own stem, producing a set of decade-specific activations that overlay the natal activations. This layering — natal chart plus decade overlay — is what gives Zi Wei its temporal depth.

Which palace hosts the current Decade Cycle reshapes the reading of every other palace in the chart. When the decade lands on the Wealth Palace, money and resource management become the decade's dominant theme; when it lands on the Spouse Palace, relational dynamics take center stage. But the decade palace does not silence the other palaces — it acts more like a spotlight, illuminating one life area while the others continue running in the background. A person whose decade is in the Career Palace still has a Wealth Palace and a Health Palace; they just experience career as the loudest signal during those ten years.

The transition between decades is one of the system's most-discussed phenomena. The shift from one Decade Cycle palace to the next can feel abrupt — a person whose previous decade was hosted by Fortune Palace (contemplative, inner-peace oriented) moving into a decade hosted by Siblings Palace (peer dynamics, lateral relationships) may experience the transition as a sudden change in what life demands of them. Zi Wei does not claim the transition is fated; it claims the chart's temporal structure creates a new emphasis, and the person's experience tends to organize around that emphasis.

The Decade Cycle interacts with the Four Activations in a layered way. The natal chart has its own set of activations (derived from the birth year stem), and the Decade Cycle adds a second set (derived from the decade palace's heavenly stem). When both layers place an activation on the same star, the signal intensifies — natal Flow Activation on Sun Star compounded by decade Flow on Sun reads as a decade where public visibility and outward giving are doubly favored. When the layers conflict — natal Flow on one star but decade Friction Activation on the same star — the reading becomes ambivalent: the natal potential is there, but the decade makes it tangled. This double-layer reading is unique to the time-cycle framework and is one of the main reasons practitioners insist on reading the Decade Cycle rather than just the natal chart.
