Triangle and Axis (三方四正 / sān fāng sì zhèng)

Triangle and Axis (三方四正 / sān fāng sì zhèng) is the rule that distinguishes Zi Wei Dou Shu from a simple twelve-room lookup. The literal translation is 'three sides, four positions': three palaces forming a triangle, plus the one cell directly opposite, together making a four-cell cluster. Every palace in the chart belongs to such a cluster, and serious readings of any palace include the readings of the other three. You cannot interpret the Wealth Palace in isolation; you read Wealth alongside the two trine cells and the opposite cell that complete its four-cell unit.

The clearest case is the Life Palace's cluster. The cells four positions ahead and four behind the Life Palace are the Career Palace and the Wealth Palace; the cell directly opposite is the Travel Palace. Together, Life + Career + Wealth + Travel form the four-cell unit classical commentaries call 命財官遷 — the cluster that holds a person's self-identity, money behavior, work trajectory, and out-of-frame behavior in a single reading. Anyone who has tried to interpret a Zi Wei chart by reading the palaces one at a time has felt the limitation of doing so; this is the rule that fixes it.

Practically, a reader scans for the cluster before committing to any single-palace interpretation. A bold Wealth Palace whose trine cells (Life + Career) are also bold reads as fundamentally wealth-oriented; a bold Wealth Palace whose trine cells are quiet reads as money-skill that doesn't necessarily translate into identity or work behavior. The cluster discloses what a single cell cannot. Western astrology has analogs (aspects, especially trines and oppositions), but Zi Wei makes the cluster mandatory rather than optional — there is no chart in which you skip the four-cell reading and still claim to have read the chart.

The 三方四正 cluster for any palace is geometrically fixed by the chart layout. Numbering the palaces 1 to 12 in their fixed positions, the trine of any palace at position N consists of positions N, N+4, and N−4 (modulo 12). The opposite cell is N+6 (modulo 12). Together these four positions are the cluster. A reader does not pick the cluster; it is built into the chart by the geometry of Zi Wei's twelve-cell layout. This is also why the 'opposite palace' cross-link that appears on every palace page is the most important of these four — the opposite is the strongest single counterpart, with the two trine cells providing supporting register.

The cluster also locks star pairings. Because the cluster is fixed, certain main stars always travel together inside it. The Slayer-Breaker-Wolf Triad — three main stars that always sit in mutual trine — is the most-discussed example. When one of them lands in the Career Palace, the other two are guaranteed to land in the cluster's trine cells (Life and Wealth). This kind of star-cluster pattern only becomes visible once you read the chart through the four-cell unit rather than cell-by-cell.

Different clusters carry different characteristic readings. The 命財官遷 cluster (Life – Career – Wealth – Travel) is the chart's professional-identity cluster. The cluster anchored on the Spouse Palace is the chart's intimate-relationship cluster, and it deliberately includes the Career cell as a trine partner — Zi Wei encodes the counter-intuitive coupling that relational shape and work shape are read together. The cluster anchored on the Siblings Palace (which includes Friends as its opposite) is the chart's lateral-relationship cluster. Each cluster has its own internal logic, and reading the cluster as a unit produces interpretations that single-cell readings cannot.

An important practical note: the four-cell cluster is not symmetric. The anchor cell — the palace you are currently reading — gets the primary weight; the opposite cell gets the second-strongest weight; the two trine cells provide supporting context. Treating all four as equal flattens the reading. A skilled reader can describe how each of the four cells contributes its share to the cluster's combined signal.

The Triangle-and-Axis framework interacts directly with the Four Activations. Because activations attach to specific stars and stars move with the cluster, an activation in the anchor cell will often have its echo reading in the opposite cell — Flow Activation in the Life Palace, for example, will frequently produce a 'wind at your back' reading not only in identity but in mobility (the Travel cell). A reader who only checks the activation's home cell misses the cluster-level effect, which is often the more interesting reading. The cluster framework also explains why Friction Activation in a Spouse Palace can produce friction in the Career Palace: they sit in mutual aspect, and the friction is structurally transmitted along the cluster's geometry.
