Nurtured (養)
gestation — nourished toward rebirth, the wait before the sprout
- Position in cycle:
- 12 / 12
- Qi state:
- gestating toward rebirth
The twelfth and final stage — an element's qi nourished and gestating, about to be reborn.
Overview
Nurtured (養, Yǎng) is the twelfth and last of the Twelve Life Stages, and it describes an element's qi gestating toward rebirth — not a person being raised. After Conceived's faint seed, the element is now being nourished and developed in preparation for emergence: still unborn, but gathering what it needs to sprout.
Nurtured closes the cycle and hands directly back to Sprouting. As an energy state it is the wait before the new beginning — weak in active terms, but readying, on the threshold of the next Sprouting. The whole twelve-stage loop is continuous: extinction at Void, reconception at Conceived, gestation here, and birth again at Sprouting.
In a chart
An element at Nurtured reads as faint but readying — gathering strength for the imminent return to Sprouting. Like Conceived, it is weak in the present but oriented toward growth. This describes the element's state, not the person's upbringing or any life event.
Worked example
Yang Wood (甲) is at Nurtured in Xu (戌): Wood gestating through late autumn's dry earth, nourished toward its rebirth at Hai (亥), where the cycle returns to Sprouting. The yin stems run the cycle in reverse.
Cross-system reference
| System | Closest archetype | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Zi Wei Dou Shu | Also a Zi Wei star — 養 in the 長生十二神 (the twelve life-stage stars), placed by the 五行局 | Zi Wei runs the identical twelve-stage cycle as its 長生十二神 star series, dropped onto the palaces according to the chart's element class (五行局). 養 is the same-named Zi Wei star — read there as a palace's phase-strength, not a Bazi element's qi. Both are strength-phase readings; neither is a life-event forecast. |
| Western astrology | A loose analogy to a planet's influence gathering before it emerges | Not an equivalence: the nearest Western idea is strength-by-position, but the gestating-before-rebirth phase that closes the Life Stage cycle has no direct counterpart. |
Cross-system anchors are a loose heuristic, not a literal equivalence. The Twelve Life Stages track the strength of an element's qi around the branch cycle — a mechanism Western astrology does not share; the nearest idea is a planet's strength by position (dignity / debility).
Reading this descriptively
Nurtured describes the strength of an element's energy at a branch — gestating toward rebirth — not a person's upbringing or any life event. It is read for what it says about that element, and the same stage plays out very differently across different charts.
