01Overview

Awakening of Insects (驚蟄, Jīng Zhé) is the third of the twenty-four solar terms and the second month-opener of the year, falling at the instant the sun reaches 345° of ecliptic longitude — usually 5 or 6 March. The name is vivid rather than literal: 驚 means "to startle" and 蟄 refers to hibernating creatures, so the term pictures thunder rousing insects that have overwintered underground.

Whatever is actually happening with insects in a given year, the term's real job in a chart is structural: it is the point where 卯, the branch of the rabbit month, takes over the month pillar from 寅. Anyone whose reading turns on which month pillar they carry needs to know which side of this instant their birth falls on.

02What it marks

Astronomically, Awakening of Insects sits between Rain Water and Spring Equinox, a month-opening term rather than a mid-point one. In the agricultural calendar it traditionally marks the moment spring's warmth becomes reliable enough that dormant life — insects, but also seeds and shoots — starts to stir, and it has long been treated as a cue for the year's early fieldwork to begin in earnest.

It sits in the middle of the traditional "mid spring" grouping, between the early-spring pair (Beginning of Spring, Rain Water) and the late-spring pair that follows it (Pure Brightness, Grain Rain).

03In a BaZi chart

Awakening of Insects is a 節 — a month-opening term — so at that instant the month pillar's branch becomes 卯 (Mǎo). This is the second of the twelve month-branch changes that happen over the course of a year, and like all twelve, it lands on a 節 rather than a 氣.

Running this site's engine across 2026 confirms the specific timing: the month branch steps into 卯 on 2026-03-06, one of the twelve dates in that year on which a pillar actually changes. The other eleven land on the other eleven 節 terms; none land on a 氣.

For a chart reader, the consequence is direct: a birth before this instant carries 寅 in the month pillar and belongs to the month Beginning of Spring opened; a birth after it carries 卯 and belongs to the month Awakening of Insects opens. The two are different month pillars even if the birth dates are only a day apart.

04Reading this descriptively

Awakening of Insects marks the instant the month pillar turns to 卯; it identifies a boundary in the calendar, not a claim about temperament, timing of events, or anything else in a reading.
