Grain Buds小滿

Grain Buds (小滿, Xiǎo Mǎn) is the eighth of the twenty-four solar terms, falling at the instant the sun reaches 60° of ecliptic longitude — usually between 20 and 22 May. The literal sense of 小滿, "lesser fullness", describes grain crops filling out but not yet ripe — a stage past the earlier stirrings of growth and short of the harvest still to come.

In the BaZi calendar it sits inside the 巳 month rather than at its edge: Beginning of Summer already opened that month two and a half weeks earlier, and Grain Buds simply marks its midpoint. No boundary is crossed here.

Astronomically, Grain Buds is a mid-point term (中氣) sitting between Beginning of Summer and Grain in Ear. In the agricultural calendar it traditionally marks a stage of visible but incomplete progress — the grain is forming, and the wait for it to ripen and be cut has properly begun.

It sits at the centre of the traditional "early summer" pairing with Beginning of Summer, the same structural position Rain Water and Spring Equinox each hold within their own seasonal groupings.

Grain Buds is a 氣 — a mid-month term — so it does not change the month pillar, the year pillar, or any other pillar in the chart. A birth on Grain Buds carries 巳 (Sì) in the month pillar, the same branch that has applied to every birth since Beginning of Summer opened the month.

This follows the pattern this site's engine confirms across the full set of twelve 氣 in 2026: none of them coincides with a month-branch change. Grain Buds is the eighth term overall and the fourth 氣 in the sequence, and like the others it is a waypoint inside a month rather than a boundary between two.

The next actual change to the month pillar does not happen until Grain in Ear, the following term, opens the 午 month.
