Year Stream (流年 / liú nián)

the annual star rearrangement — each calendar year, the stars shift into new positions, creating a temporary overlay on the natal chart

While the Annual Cycle tells you which palace is foregrounded this year, the Year Stream tells you where the stars have moved. Every calendar year, Zi Wei recalculates star positions based on the year's Earthly Branch, producing a fresh arrangement that overlays the natal chart. This is the layer where the chart becomes most visibly dynamic.

Overview

Year Stream (流年 / liú nián) is the temporal layer that makes a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart move. The natal chart is fixed at birth — stars sit in their palaces and do not relocate. But the Year Stream creates a second set of star positions recalculated each calendar year, producing a temporary overlay. The year's fourteen main stars land in new palaces; the year's activations attach to new carriers. The result is a chart that looks different every year while the natal foundation remains unchanged underneath. A person reading their chart for 2026 sees both their natal Emperor Star in (say) the Career Palace and the year-stream Emperor Star in a different palace — and the reading of the year requires holding both in view.

The Year Stream is calculated from the calendar year's Earthly Branch (地支), not from the person's birth data. This means the Year Stream overlay is the same for everyone in the same calendar year — every person alive in a 丙午 (bǐng wǔ) year sees the same year-stream star arrangement. What differs is how that shared overlay interacts with each person's unique natal chart. Year-stream Wolf Star landing on your natal Wealth Palace reads very differently from it landing on your natal Health Palace. The Year Stream is universal in arrangement but individual in interpretation.

This layer is also where beginners most often mistake the chart for a fortune-telling tool. The Year Stream's annual rearrangement can look like a prediction engine — 'Wolf Star moves into Wealth Palace this year, so money will be chaotic.' That reading collapses the system. The Year Stream describes which palace receives which visiting star's qualities for the year: the Wealth Palace receiving Wolf reads as appetite-driven financial behavior becoming more salient, not as a forecast of financial chaos. The distinction is between describing a tendency and declaring an outcome.

How it works in the chart

Year Stream star positions are derived from the calendar year's Earthly Branch using a fixed lookup. Each of the twelve Branches produces a specific arrangement of the fourteen main stars across the twelve palaces. The arrangement follows the same star-placement algorithms used for natal charts but keyed to the year's Branch instead of the birth hour and date. Because there are twelve Branches and the cycle repeats every twelve years, the Year Stream arrangement also repeats on a twelve-year cycle — the year-stream positions for 2026 will recur in 2038.

The Year Stream also generates its own set of Four Activations from the year's Heavenly Stem. These year-stream activations are the third activation layer (after natal and decade), and they change every year. When a year-stream activation reinforces a natal activation — both placing Flow on the same star — practitioners read the year as strongly favoring that star's domain. When a year-stream Friction Activation conflicts with a natal Flow Activation on the same star, the reading captures the tension between long-term ease and short-term friction. The three-layer activation system is the core of advanced Zi Wei temporal reading.

Effects across palaces

The Year Stream rearrangement means that every palace in the chart receives a different visiting star each year. The natal stars remain fixed, but the year-stream stars create new pairings. When year-stream Mechanism Star visits the natal Career Palace, the year's career energy carries Mechanism's restless analytical quality — a year of strategic rethinking, plan-changing, curiosity about new directions. When year-stream Harmony Star visits the natal Spouse Palace, the year's relational energy carries Harmony's comfort-seeking and low-conflict quality. These visiting-star readings layer on top of whatever natal stars already sit in the palace, producing a composite signal unique to that year.

Practitioners pay special attention to years when a year-stream star returns to its natal position — a phenomenon comparable to Western astrology's planetary return. Year-stream Emperor Star landing back in the palace where natal Emperor Star already sits reads as a year where that palace's Emperor qualities are doubly activated. These natal-return years happen approximately once every twelve years for each main star and are often experienced as years of particular intensity in the relevant life area.

Pairings with other activations

The Year Stream works in tandem with the Annual Cycle, and the two layers address different questions. The Annual Cycle asks 'which palace is hosting this year?' — foregrounding a life area. The Year Stream asks 'where have the stars moved this year?' — rearranging the qualities across all palaces. A complete year-level reading requires both: the Annual Cycle palace provides the thematic foreground, and the Year Stream provides the quality-rearrangement that colors every palace including the annual one. The Month Stream then adds a still finer overlay within the year, rearranging stars month by month. The full temporal stack — natal → decade → annual-cycle → year-stream → month-stream — is what gives Zi Wei its reputation as a system that reads time with unusual granularity.

Cross-system reference

SystemClosest archetypeNote
Zi Wei Dou ShuYear Stream (流年 / liú nián)Annual star rearrangement overlaying the natal chart. Calculated from the calendar year's Earthly Branch; universal arrangement, individual interpretation.
Western astrologySolar return / annual transitsWestern astrology reads annual transits (where planets are now relative to the natal chart) and the solar return chart (a snapshot of the sky at the exact birthday). The Year Stream captures a comparable annual overlay, but uses a discrete twelve-year cycle rather than continuous planetary motion.
16-type personalityNo direct analogThe 16-type system does not model annual shifts in cognitive function. The closest conceptual parallel is situational type expression — the observation that different environments or life phases pull different functions forward — but this is informal rather than structurally encoded.

Cross-system anchors are heuristic, not literal. ZWDS activations, Western astrology transits, and 16-type personality structures were built on different first principles. The value of pairing them is to give a Western reader somewhere familiar to land — not to claim the systems describe the same thing.
