The Zi Wei Time Layer: Decade, Year, and Month
A Zi Wei chart is not frozen at birth. Four moving frames — the Decade Cycle, the two annual layers, and the Month Stream — slide across the fixed chart, so a given decade or year is governed by a particular palace. The Zi Wei counterpart to BaZi's Luck Pillars: weather over a fixed landscape, never a timetable of events.
Everything in this series so far has described a chart frozen at the moment of birth: a Self Palace, a cast of main stars in their rooms, the clusters they are read in, and the Four Activations tuning four of them. This is the capstone — the layer that makes the frozen chart move. Zi Wei does not read a life as a single fixed snapshot; it reads a fixed foundation with a set of moving frames sliding across it over the years. This is the time layer, and it is the Zi Wei counterpart to BaZi's Luck Pillars.
There are four moving frames, nested from widest to narrowest: the decade, the minor year, the flowing year, and the month.
The Decade Cycle (大限): the ten-year frame
The widest frame is the Decade Cycle (大限). Starting from the age set by the Five Elements Bureau (五行局), the chart assigns each ten-year stretch to a specific palace, and the stars in that palace — together with the palace's own character — become the dominant signal for those years. A decade landing on the Career Palace with the Emperor in it reads as a stretch where professional authority crystallizes; the next decade landing on the Travel Palace with the Greedy Wolf reads as a restless ten years of movement and appetite. The natal chart is not overwritten — the decade is a spotlight, illuminating one life area while the others keep running in the background.
The mechanics are fixed at birth. The starting palace comes from the Five Elements Bureau (五行局) — a number (Water-2, Wood-3, Metal-4, Earth-5, Fire-6) derived from your Self Palace position and birth-year stem, which sets the age your first decade begins. The direction of rotation depends on your birth-year stem polarity and gender: yang-stem men and yin-stem women run one way around the ring, the other pairing runs the opposite way. So two people with identical natal charts but different genders walk the twelve palaces in opposite directions — the same potential unfolding along different temporal paths. This is the layer where, in practice, most people first feel the chart describing their actual life: the natal chart is abstract; the Decade Cycle maps it onto lived decades.
The annual frames: 小限 and 流年
Inside the decade sit two annual layers, and they are genuinely distinct — worth keeping separate rather than blurring into "the year."
In the approach this chart uses, the Annual Cycle (小限) assigns a palace to each individual year, advancing one palace per year in the same direction as the decade, completing a full loop every twelve years. (Schools differ in how they count the 小限 and how much weight they give it versus the 流年; this is the rule this site follows.) So you are always in two frames at once — a decade palace and a year palace — and both contribute. A year whose Annual Cycle lands on the Health Palace inside a decade dominated by the Career Palace reads as a year where the body becomes loud inside a career-dominated stretch.
The Year Stream (流年) is the layer that most makes the chart move. Each calendar year adds a fresh time overlay: the year's branch locates the year palace, while the year's stem governs that year's activations, and the flowing stars are read as part of the time layer the chart uses. Crucially, this overlay is calculated from the calendar year, not your birth data — so the calendar-year layer is shared by everyone alive in the same year. What differs is how that shared overlay meets your natal chart: year-stream Greedy Wolf landing on your natal Wealth Palace reads very differently from it landing on your natal Health Palace. Universal in arrangement, individual in interpretation.
The narrowest frame, the Month Stream (流月), applies the same logic month by month, for readers who want finer resolution. The nesting runs all the way down: decade inside life, year inside decade, month inside year.
How the frames layer
The reason the time layer gives Zi Wei its depth is that the frames compound. Each moving frame can carry its own Four Activations, recalculated from that frame's own stem and laid over the natal set. When a natal activation and a decade activation land on the same star, the signal intensifies — natal Flow on the Sun doubled by decade Flow on the Sun reads as a decade where visibility is doubly favoured. When they conflict — natal Flow but decade Friction on the same star — the reading turns ambivalent: the potential is there, but the decade tangles it. And each frame's palace is still read through its Triangle and Axis cluster, not in isolation. A full reading is the natal chart plus these overlays held together — which is exactly why reading only the natal chart is doing half a reading.
What the time layer is not
It needs saying plainly, because the moving frames are where the chart looks most like a prediction engine and most often gets misused. The time layer describes which part of the chart the emphasis currently sits on — not what will happen there. The Annual Cycle landing on your Wealth Palace does not mean you will earn more this year; it means money-related dynamics become more salient — decisions about spending, saving, and earning surface more often. The Year Stream's Greedy Wolf moving into your Wealth Palace does not forecast financial chaos; it reads as appetite-driven financial behaviour becoming more prominent. The whole line between reading a chart and misusing it is the difference between "this year emphasizes X" and "this year X will happen." The time layer is structural, like everything else on this site — it moves the spotlight; it does not script the scene.
